This policy applies to all Marino users, including Riders and Drivers (including Driver applicants), and to all Marino platforms and services, including our mobile applications, websites, features, and other digital services (collectively, the “Marino Platform”). Please remember that your use of the Marino Platform is also subject to our Terms of Service.
The operations of the Marino Platform are registered and managed in full compliance with the Personal Data Protection Act, 2022 (PDPA) of the United Republic of Tanzania.
When you use the Marino Platform, we collect the information you provide, usage information, and information about your mobile device. We also collect information about you from other sources like third-party services and optional programs in which you participate, which we may combine with other information we have about you.
Account Registration: When you create an account with Marino, we collect the information you provide us, such as your name, email address, phone number, and digital payment preferences (including mobile money wallet details and bank accounts). You may choose to share additional info for your Rider profile, like your photo, saved addresses (e.g., home or work), and preferences.
Driver Information: If you apply to be a Driver, we collect the information you provide in your application to verify your identity and regulatory standing. This includes your name, email address, phone number, date of birth, profile photo, physical address, National Identification Authority (NIDA) number, Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN), driver’s license details, vehicle registration documents from the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA), and commercial vehicle insurance verification. We also collect payment details to process payouts (such as mobile money numbers or local bank details). Depending on regional mandates, we may request specialized LATRA driver permits or additional business licenses. We may require supplementary identity verifications (such as a live selfie) at any point during your tenure.
SOS Contact Information: To ensure user safety, our application requests contact list permissions. This allows you to explicitly select and import trusted emergency contacts into the app’s SOS feature.
Ratings and Feedback: When you rate and provide feedback about rides, we collect all the information you submit in your reviews.
Communications: When you contact our support desk or when we contact you, we retain the contents of those communications, including any file attachments or screenshots you send.
Location Information: Precise pickup and routing logistics require continuous spatial data. The Marino Platform collects location parameters (including GPS and Wi-Fi data) dynamically based on your app permissions:
Riders: We collect your device’s precise coordinates when the app is open and running on your screen, as well as when it runs in the background from the moment a ride is requested until it is officially marked as complete by the driver.
Drivers: We collect precise device location telemetry whenever the app is open on your screen or running in the background while in "Driver Mode." We also collect location coordinates for a limited window after you exit driver mode to assist with automated trip incident detection and safety investigations.
Usage Information: We compile metrics detailing your interaction with the platform, including ride dates, times, exact pickup and drop-off nodes, total distance traveled, chosen route, fare breakdown, and whether a promotional code was applied. We also capture behavioral metrics concerning how you navigate our interfaces, page views, and timestamps.
Device Information: We extract technical data from the hardware used to access our platform, including device model, IP address, web browser type, operating system version, mobile network operator/carrier, radio type (e.g., 4G, 5G), preferred language settings, push notification tokens, and application installation logs. For Drivers, we also collect mobile sensor data (including speed, direction, orientation, acceleration, and braking patterns).
Communications Between Riders and Drivers: To protect user privacy, we utilize masked communication relays that allow phone calls and text messages between Riders and Drivers to occur without revealing either party’s actual phone number. While we use specialized gateways to facilitate this, we collect operational data regarding these interactions, including participant metadata, timestamps, and the text contents of SMS communications. For security monitoring, calls may be recorded; users will receive an automated notice prior to call initialization.
Address Book Contacts: If you explicitly grant the app permission to access your device’s address book, we will access and store the names and contact details of your contacts solely to operationalize peer-to-peer referral programs or invite features.
Cookies and Tracking Technologies: We utilize cookies, tracking pixels, and software development kits (SDKs) to store basic preferences, maintain session security, analyze platform traffic trends via automated analytical suites, and deliver relevant operational notifications. You can alter your tracking settings directly through your native mobile OS or web browser configuration.
Third-Party Services: We coordinate with external registries to ensure core platform safety. This includes receiving background check verifications, validation of active driving records, fraud detection scores from corporate partners, and insurance claim summaries.
Enterprise Programs: If an employer or corporate entity registers you under a Marino Business profile or customized corporate logistics program, we ingest your work-related contact details and authorization levels directly from that enterprise client.
Concierge and Referral Service: If a hospitality vendor, tour coordinator, or independent user requests a ride on your behalf via our Concierge functions, they provide us with your phone number and target destination. Similarly, if an existing user refers you, we collect your contact information from their shared submission.
We process your personal information strictly based on legitimate operational ground rules, contractual necessity, and regulatory adherence to Tanzanian transport and data laws. Your information is used to:
Provide and Optimize Services: Authenticate accounts, maintain secure profiles, accurately calculate distance-based pricing in alignment with LATRA tariff policies, and distribute digital receipts.
Safety and Security Auditing: Screen driver applicants against safety criteria, monitor on-road telemetry to detect unusual stops or speed anomalies, handle insurance filings, and permanently block fraudulent or dangerous accounts from the ecosystem.
Customer Care Support: Investigate technical glitches, resolve billing disputes, and recover lost property reported by users.
Platform Refinement: Run internal system tests, remove architectural code bugs, and develop automated routing algorithms to reduce rider wait times.
Legal and Regulatory Response: Cooperate with lawful requests from law enforcement agencies, tax audits by the TRA, or regulatory compliance reviews initiated by LATRA or the Personal Data Protection Commission (PDPC).
We do not sell your personal data. To execute reliable transit services, your personal information is shared under the following conditions:
Rider Data Shared with Driver: Upon a ride request, the assigned Driver views the Rider’s first name, pickup node, profile image, historical platform rating, and account age. During the transit window, the Driver is granted access to the destination coordinates and additional route drop-offs. Rating feedback submitted by the Rider is eventually shared with the Driver anonymously.
Driver Data Shared with Rider: When a Driver accepts a match, the Rider sees the Driver’s verified name, profile photo, real-time vehicle positioning, current rating, and the vehicle's make, model, color, and TRA license plate.
Privacy Safeguard: Actual phone numbers are hidden behind automated masking systems during all routine pickup logistics. Actual contact profiles are shared only in the event of documented lost items, and only after receiving explicit user consent.
Shared Packages or Consolidated Transits: If you utilize shared transport packages or multi-passenger routing, participating passengers may view your name, profile photo, and intermediate pickup/drop-off points along the shared transit path.
Sponsored and Business Profiles: If a ride is funded or arranged by a corporate employer, a government subsidy program, or a third party via a business voucher, the complete trip parameters—including times, charges, routes, and locations—are accessible by the entity managing that account profile.
We share specific identifiers, financial data, and tracking metrics with verified data processors working on our behalf for business tasks, including:
Cloud storage providers and infrastructure hosts.
Payment gateways managing mobile money networks and banking infrastructure.
Identity verification systems and professional background screening agencies.
Legal advisers, insurance underwriters, and emergency response services during critical traffic incidents.
We will share your information if required to comply with a valid court order, a decree by a Tanzanian regulatory body, or an active criminal investigation. Additionally, data profiles may transfer as part of corporate assets during negotiations for corporate mergers, consolidations, or platform restructurings.
Your data is securely stored on protected servers configured to meet the security parameters outlined in the PDPA, 2022.
We maintain active account profiles for the entire lifespan of your account. Transactional profiles, including complete financial ledgers, route details, and payment receipts, are legally retained for a mandatory minimum period of seven (7) years to ensure compliance with Tanzanian statutory tax, corporate reporting, and audit requirements.
While we implement robust electronic safeguards to protect your personal files, no network infrastructure can be guaranteed as entirely immune to external disruptions; we maintain reactive security response protocols to manage any data anomalies.
As a data subject under the Personal Data Protection Act, 2022, you hold complete statutory rights regarding your personal records.
Right to Know and Access: You can request a clear summary of the categories and specific pieces of personal information we hold regarding your profile, along with details on how it is shared.
Right to Rectification: You can update or correct inaccurate account credentials directly through the profile editing panel inside the app.
Right to Erasure (Deletion): You can submit a formal deletion request through our privacy desk. Upon verification, we will direct our internal databases and third-party processors to wipe your data profile, subject to statutory exceptions (such as open insurance cases, unpaid balances, or mandatory tax records).
Communication Opt-Outs: You can unsubscribe from promotional text messages or automated marketing emails via the built-in app settings or by using the unsubscribe link. Critical transactional summaries, receipt distributions, and safety alerts will continue to deliver normally.
System Permission Adjustments: You can revoke platform access to your device's background location streams or address book contacts through your phone's native settings, though doing so will restrict the core functionality of the ride-booking engine.
In strict compliance with local data guidelines, we acknowledge your right to file an official complaint directly with the Personal Data Protection Commission (PDPC) if you believe the processing of your personal information breaches the law. We aim to review and process all verified user data access or deletion requests within thirty (30) days of receipt.
At Marino, we respect your privacy and provide you with the ability to delete your account and associated personal data at any time.
